History of Castle Rock Lake
The origins of Castle Rock Flowage date back to the 1920s with the Consolidated Water Power and Paper Company plans to satisfy a need for additional electric energy. Most interesting was the task of land acquisition being completed by three buyers with no disclosure of the intended purpose. In fact a number of acres where purchased for back taxes in the depression era.
Later, the Wisconsin River Power Company (WRPCo) formed in 1947, initiated construction on the dam March 15, 1948 and put generators into commercial operation January 1, 1951. The five hydroelectric units can produce up to 15 million watts of energy. Castle Rock is actually downriver from the dam. WRPCo operates the damn under federal license requiring an outline of overall land use and a recreation plan. The current license expires in 2031.
History of Snug Harbor
Snug Harbor is located in Quincy Township, Adams County, Wisconsin on Castle Rock Lake offering both on water and deeded access real estate located on the east side of the lake close to Castle Rock County Park. Snug Harbor is not really on the Castle Rock but its on Klein Creek & Duck Creek which merge right at the subdivision then flow into the lake as they flow under County Road Z. There is a 7 acre outlot nick named Pine Forest in the heart of the development. There are 92 Lots, 88 Members/Owners, 70 Homes.
In the late 1980s, the Wisconsin River Power Company and Spring Tree Development began marketing a "Planned Community" named Snug Harbor along with Dover Shores and others. "Live the Wildlife" and "We're doing it right" were the headlines on advertising materials describing 46 lots and Harbor Homes sites in what is called the First through Fourth Additions. Lots 1 & 2 listed at $13,900, Lot 7 at $28,900 and Lot 30 listed at $32,900. The Harbor Homes started at $89,800. The Pine forest Lots 40-46, each approximately 1.5 acres in size, commanded a price of $14,900. The best deal was had on Lots 5, 8 and 15 at $8,900.
In spring of 1996, WRPCo offered the "South Addition" for sale, adding lots 48 to 68 and the Pine Ridge Addition adding lots 71 to 90. The last two lots of the development, 91 and 92 were sold in 1999.
The Articles and Covenants of the Snug Harbor Homeowners Association are bound to the deeds of the properties in the development. The Association provides services to the community, preserves the Architectural integrity and maintains common property.
